ARCHERFIELD

Archerfield Estate is a historic ground, though as you drive past Archerfield House and past the perfectly manicured practice area and fitting centre, it starts to become apparent that you’re not in for an authentic, traditional links experience, but quite the opposite. The pyramids of balls on the range are all Pro V’s and are re-stocked constantly by the Greens Staff. We pulled up to the entrance of a very American looking, new clubhouse and a very welcoming chap took our bags off to the tee. I’d never experienced anything like this. But in all honesty, it wasn't my cup of tea.

Maybe I'm being harsh, but I couldn't help thinking that if this course wasn't in East Lothian, it would have very few visitors. Immaculate, difficult but Americanised, expensive, modern, and lacking character. Down and back, elevated greens and sloped run offs. That's about all that can be said about the course design.

That said, I'd love to come back and give it a second look, I’ll just have to get saving.
