Birdsong leads me down a dry dusty cart path. The clubs in my bag clatter as I rest them by the starters hut on Gullane Hill. A whistling sea breeze and the ripple of flags settle back in. Legend has it that bygone handloom-weavers of Dirleton and Aberlady played golf on Gullane links some three hundred and seventy years ago on ‘Auld Handsel Monday’. And as I survey the vista overlooking Kilspindie and Luffness, where emerald sets entwine through a rugged bay below the links and dunes, it feels as though what I’m about the experience is a course fabricated by the hands of golfing Gods.
